In order to correctly describe the order (inquiry), below are the basic concepts and information about CNC milling

Computer technologies and robotics are playing an increasingly important role in many industries (for example, metalworking with numerically controlled machine tools – CNC) and services. It is an inevitable process, as people strive to minimize labor costs, and to do it more efficiently, effectively and safely. What once had to be done by a team of skilled craftsmen under the supervision of a person controlling their work, now they can make machines . You no longer need a group of craftsmen who have spent years exploring the secrets of craftsmanship, because programmers and machine operators have appeared instead. Their task is to operate and supervise the devices entrusted to them.

One of the most important devices in the engineering industry is a CNC milling machine . It is widely used because it enables very efficient processing of elements thanks to the use of specially profiled tools called cutters .

What is CNC milling?

CNC milling is one of the types of machining. The tool performs a rotary motion. The feed motion can also be performed by the cutter, but also by the workpiece. In other words, we will refer to milling as a type of surface machining performed by a plurality of cutting blades making up the cutting tool.

During operation, only some of the blades are subjected to stress, therefore their operation is not continuous and they are better cooled. However, variations in the thickness of the cut layer result in variable blade loads and thus shorten their service life.

Types of milling machines

We divide milling machines into lowspindle and highspindle . In routers , the spindle is located under the table. In addition, there are also vertical, horizontal and universal milling machines. There are also different types of cutters, and their selection is very important. You can choose from a variety of shapes and sizes and can be made of steel , cemented or covered with diamond plate , for example.

Milling techniques

Milling techniques can be based on various criteria and we can distinguish them as follows:

KINEMATIC CRITERION

Conventional milling – during this type of milling the cutting edges are moved in accordance with the sliding motion of the material. This is a very precise method, because the cutting starts at a certain point, and the chips are removed behind the cutter. The disadvantage of this solution is the large forces acting on the cutter, so it must be made of materials with high hardness. It also requires appropriate machine tools with backlash erasing.

Counter-rotating milling – is characterized by the fact that the edges of the blades (which are pressed against the material) move opposite to the sliding movement of the material. The milling cutter initially slides on the workpiece, and then drills into the material. This technique has the advantage of lower vibrations than with concurrent milling.

CNC milling – is one of the types of CNC machining. We distinguish the following CNC milling formats:

2D milling – it is a smooth material processing in the XY axes.

3D milling – it is smooth material processing in XYZ axes, simultaneous movement in three axes.

4D milling – it is smooth machining in XYZA axes, simultaneous movement in three axes + additional A axis.

5D milling – it is smooth machining in XYZAC axes.
CNC milling Aluminum and plastics – it is material processing with the use of high-speed spindles. We currently have CNC machines with high-speed spindles dedicated to the processing of aluminum, copper, brass and PTFE plastics.

Design criterion

Full milling – is called three-sided, because three machined surfaces are created simultaneously.

Partial milling – also known as two-sided, two surfaces are processed simultaneously.

Free-form milling – i.e. one-sided milling, here is one machined surface.

Milling technology criterion

Cylindrical (circumferential) milling – here the milling axis is parallel to the machined surface

Face milling – the axis of the cutter occupies a position perpendicular to the machined surface

Oblique milling – the axis of the cutter is at an angle to the machined surface.

Advantages of CNC milling

CNC milling is a very popular technique for cutting material due to its numerous advantages, such as:

  • High processing precision – it is possible to obtain complex shapes based on technical drawings in the form of a printout or as a CAD file
  • Versatility – various materials can be CNC milled, metals (e.g. aluminum), plastics and wood.
  • Repeatability of the production process – many elements with the same parameters can be obtained.
  • Efficiency (speed) – it is possible to work many milling machines simultaneously continuously.
  • High level of security.

Forming the material

Thanks to the increasing popularity of digitally controlled machine tools, the material processing process has been significantly accelerated. What is the material forming process? First, the device must be programmed, i.e. the sequence of movements to be made by the cutter. This is the task of specialists who, having at their disposal technical documentation, technical drawings, design program files, define the final geometry of the product. They can also handle the finished product.

Having the necessary information, it is entered into a special computer program. This program generates a work sequence for the machine tool.

With the start of the machining process, the process is automatic. However, the supervision of the operator who tracks and supervises the correctness of the process is still ongoing. If necessary, it corrects the operation of the machine.
